My daughter has a sweet little friend named Kenzie who loves my desserts! I have always fixed her and her brothers and sisters their very own special dessert for their birthdays. When I asked her what she wanted–she said, ” A chocolate cake with strawberries and chocolate”.

I had to think on it for a little bit to really get in my mind how I was going to make this cake. One night while sleeping, I saw it–in my brain–seriously! So here is the creation. Every single bit of it is homemade :) Easy, peasy, and SO yummy!

Chocolate Cake with Strawberry Cream Cheese Frosting
For the cake:
  • Ingredients:
  • 2 cups cake flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup water
  • 3 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate
  • ½ cup butter
  • 1½ cups white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ⅔ cup sour cream
For the frosting:
  • Ingredients:
  • 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pint of strawberries, hulled and chopped (reserve a few to place on top)
  • chocolate syrup for drizzle
Directions for the cake:
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Sift the flour with the baking soda and salt three times.
  3. Boil the water and add it to the chocolate, and stir until melted.
  4. Cream together the butter or margarine and the sugar. Add the eggs and mix well. Stir in the vanilla.
  5. Blend in the chocolate mixture to the creamed mixture. Add the flour alternately with the sour cream, beating well after each addition. Pour batter into two 9 inch round cake pans.
  6. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until cakes tests done.
Directions for the icing
  1. In a medium bowl, cream together the cream cheese and butter until creamy. Mix in the vanilla, then gradually stir in the confectioners' sugar.
  2. Take chopped strawberries in another bowl and mash to allow the juices to flow. Mix strawberries with cream cheese mixture. Allow the icing to rest in the refrigerator for a bit until it comes together then frost the cake as normal!
  3. Drizzle cake with chocolate syrup and place reserved strawberries on top for garnish.


This dessert would also make a great cake for a Valentine Dinner with your sweetie!
