I totally LOVE hot dogs, and when I found out that July was National Hot Dog Month, I decided to submit a proposal to the Foodbuzz 24×24 surrounding hot dogs and they loved my idea SO much that they chose me to share with you about my perfect hot dog party!
Every year, we have a block party for all the kids in the neighborhood before they start back to school. We have food, lots of fun, and spend time talking to them about their fears. anxieties, and excitement about school.
This year, we served hot dogs–a bunch of different ways. For starters, I pulled out the Lil’ Smokies and created two different dishes. Both make great appetizers and are super easy to make (recipes coming in a later post this week).
These both are not necessarily hot dogs, but the come from the hot dog family, so I figured they would fit in great for our feast!
Next up, I decided to try my hand at making the all time favorite food fare–PRETZEL DOGS! These were super easy to make and taste delicious with a spicy jalapeno mustard
I figured after eating all that, the kids would be full–but NO WAY! They were ready for the ultimate hot dog moment–the contest. Who could build the best looking dog and give it a special name? We had lots of entries! I gave the kids tons of veggies and condiments to use to build their own dog–
The winner wound up being a fabulous Salsa dog! It was a grilled hot dog, covered in guacamole, salsa, cheese, and crushed tortilla chips! I wasn’t able to get a picture of the dog or the winner because it got ate before I could snap a photo , but trust me it was SO good (I will make another one later in the month and share the recipe with you here!)
We took a break from eating for a while and had fun playing on the slip and slide and having water gun fights. While the kids were doing that, I went into the kitchen and prepared my next hot dog dish–a super easy Chili Dog Casserole! I was going to make just plain chili dogs, but I decided to put it into a casserole dish instead. It was deeeelish!
The cool thing about this dish is that instead of using hot dog buns, you wrap the hot dogs in a tortilla shell–kind of like a burrito or enchilada YUMMY!
The end of the evening ended with the infamous TATER Dog! These guys take a while to prepare (if you don’t have one of those potato spinny things–which I don’t). The look though is fabulous–check it out!
Potatoes and hot dogs–what more could you ask for, right? I made a delicious and tangy ketchup based sauce to go with these yummy dogs! What few I had were gobbled up in no time flat!
For dessert, we made banana splits in keeping with a sort of hot dog theme! I took hot dog buns and buttered the inside, then sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon and then toasted them in the broiler for just a few minutes. I then topped that with a couple scoops of ice cream and hot fudge sauce with nuts! To die for(seriously you have to try it–the kids LOVED it)!
All in all, this turned out to be a great party and I am SO glad that I was chosen by the Foodbuzz team to share about my Hot Dog Block Party!
I would love to hear about a specific kind of hot dog that you have recently tried that you would love to see recreated!
