2012 was a hard year for me as a parent. I was smacked in the face with my imperfections when I really thought I was being “the perfect parent”. I really thought I deserved a “Perfect Parent of the Year Award”. However, back in February, my daughter revealed some things to me that she was going through and my whole world came crashing down.I asked her if I could share it and she said she did not care. So with open humility to show my failures as a parent, I tell you this.
My daughter went through a period of self injury.
For a parent, that is one of our worst fears, but it also makes me realize that I am not perfect and will never be. I spent alot of time ignoring her and yelling when things were not right, and I just was oblivious to her issues. To me, she was invisible. I had way to much going on to pay attention to her when she needed me the most.
At the moment she told me this, I completely and totally realized that I am a total failure.
I was devastated, but in the end, God reminded me that I am not a perfect mom. However, instead of giving up, I could change and find ways to become a better mom — one that loved authentically and admitted when I failed.
That is one reason why I am glad I am on the No More Perfect Moms launch team.
Jill Savage’s new book is just really speaking to me about not trying to be this perfect parent that I think I need to be, but to just be who God created me to be and to LOVE my kids, my family with everything in me. It’s ok to fail, it’s ok to admit to failing — our kids learn from when we fail and still get back up!
