My daughter plays drums. Never in a million years did I think that she would want to play any musical instrument, but when she began to show an interest about 3 years ago, my husband and I sat up and took notice. We started making calls, talking to people, getting her a drum set and setting up lessons for her to take. It’s something she enjoys, but along the way other things have happened too. Here are 13 reasons why your child should take music lessons.

Music Lessons

  1. Higher Test Scores: Studies have shown connections between musical training and higher scores in both reading and math. I think the reason for this is the counting of the beats and the reading of the music. If you do it for longer periods of time, it will indeed boost both your reading levels and mathematical stability.
  2. Work as part of a team: Playing music, especially duets and in small groups, teaches children how to work as part of a team, an important skill they will need in school and later at work. My daughter and her best friend are working on a song together and they played it for me the other day. It sounds amazing! I cannot wait to hear it on the big stage at church.
  3. Good discipline and work ethic: Keeping up a steady practice schedule instills great discipline and work ethic in kids, teaching them to work hard and be patient. One thing my daughter is learning is this — it takes patience to get it just right. I have noticed a big difference in her work ethic around the home and her personality all together.
  4. Improving Important Skills: Musical training improves memory, language skills and listening skills. Studies have shown that this combination leads to improved ability to learn a second language.
  5. Developmental Skills: Playing an instrument improves hand-eye coordination and nuanced muscle control, as musicians must make very precise gestures in order to play their instruments correctly. Her drums work every muscle in her legs and arms and is great exercise.
  6. Better language development: Children who grow up around music show more advanced language development, even at 2 years old, than children who don’t.
  7. Understanding Relationships: Studying music improves a child’s ability to understand spatial-temporal relationships, a skill which can help in fields ranging from math and engineering to architecture and gaming.
  8. Ability to Focus: Learning music improves a child’s ability to focus, which can lead to better studying and higher test scores.
  9. Gain Confidence: Children who study and perform music gain confidence and learn to conquer stage fright. My daughter just did this the other night. I was SO proud of her! It’s the first big step in many she will be taking this year.
  10. Problem Solving: Education in music and the arts helps children learn to think about problems creatively, finding multiple solutions to problems
  11. Higher Test Scores: Recent studies have shown that students who studied music go on to achieve higher scores on average than students who did not study music
  12. Make Better Choices: Kids who study music and the arts are more likely to graduate from high school and are less likely to abuse drugs and alcohol
  13. Improves Self Esteem: Learning a musical instrument and performing improves a child’s self-esteem.

It’s a proven fact — music lessons make you smarter.
